The 5800X3D is a special case and worth understanding before it is quoted alongside ordinary eight-core parts. AMD stacked an extra 64 MB of L3 on top of the standard 32 MB, giving 96 MB total. In games — which are unusually sensitive to cache misses — that single change outweighs a clock deficit of several hundred megahertz against newer chips.
The definitive last upgrade for an existing AM4 system: it drops into a B450 or X570 board with a BIOS update, keeps the DDR4 kit, and lifts gaming performance to the level of a current-generation platform without replacing board, memory and cooler.
WOF packaging, no cooler. Check the board vendor's BIOS support list before quoting an upgrade — most 400-series boards need a firmware update to POST with this part.
